No update doesn't mean no running!

As per Rick's schedule, I did my 4 miles on Thursday and 8 on Saturday morning.

Proof: Thursday evening.

No pictures from Saturday morning! Dana was off to Orlando for the Disney Princes half marathon. No Dana = No pictures. You will just have to take my word for it.

I seriously hate the Florida weather sometimes. The sudden rise in temperatures has, besides giving me a cold, made it too difficult to run early evening or late morning on Saturday. There goes my Saturday morning sleep with the cold winters!

Tuesday, 22nd

Place: Kirkwood, Gainesville, Fl.
Runner: ME
Miles: 5

With the group at Kirkwood, just before an amazing evening run.

When I started running 6 months back, I couldn't run even a mile straight. My goal was just to finish running the loop in Kirkwood. But yesterday I went back for extra two! :O Do I need to say that I am super duper happy! Thanks to Vineetha who was up for extra two!

Another reason I hate meetings!

Apparently I have a lot of free time on my hands. That is the only explanation I can give for becoming a Graduate Student Council rep. And just because of this one meeting, which really wasn't much use, I ended up missing my run with the group. Sort of made up for it and will do more miles on Saturday.

PS: I am writing this sitting in a meeting :D

4 to start the week

Following Rick's (Team Asha coach) schedule, I ran 4 miles today. After a slump last week, it was great to be back on the trail. I think finally my confidence levels are high, and I should be able to finish the Gate River Run without much pain. At least I hope so!

And the best part was the chocolate cake Kelly had baked for Dana's birthday party. Yummy!

From One Geek to Another: This is How I Became a Distance Runner

On Going Cold Turkey

I'm the type of person that goes cold turkey. If I need to change my life I do it drastically and give myself no room for error.  This is how I started out as a runner: I didn't begin with a casual jog once or twice a week and slowly build up to serious running.  I started off running nearly 5 days a week and kept at it.  I knew that if I gave myself more than a few days off I'd start making frequent compromises and I'd end up quitting.

Sleepy Six Saturday

The fluctuating weather in Gainesville, one day its hot and next day its chilly. Sleep deprived and really tired, it was still great to be out on the trail. Thank God it was a slow week, did a total of 6 miles - a lot of it in walking. I am planning on more than making up for it  this week!

Can't wait to get to Kirkwood on Tuesday!

I am grumpy!

There is just too much work today, plus I need to prepare for a presentation tomorrow morning. Looks like I am going to miss the run and my good nights sleep tonight. I totally intend on making up for it on Saturday morning. Hopefully it will be a good morning to run.

3 in 33!!

After gym on Monday, my muscles were really sore today. But as long as the calves are fine, I shall run! With Abhijeet not around to slow me down, I ended up running faster than usual. Also, increased the duration of my run today, almost the entire last two miles.

Totally deserved the brownies Dana had brought! =)

Monday Morning Blues!

After 8 miles on Saturday, my legs are feeling like lead. Icing my knee sure helped and now my knee isn't hurting anymore. Thanks Dana for the advice! Since Mondays are off days, I am off to the gym. Need to exercise rest of the muscles in my body :D

Food for Thought: Applies to life and long distance running

“Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Thanks for the video Bloke!

I am not sure about running barefoot, but the video did inspire me to keep running!

8 miles in 1:35!

Today the weather in Gainesville was perfect for a morning run. Slight drizzle turned to rain and kept the temperature perfect for running. With 8 miles down today, I think finishing the Gate River Run shouldn't be a big task. Gotta take care of my knee though, started hurting more than usual after 7 miles.

Note to myself: No skipping dinner on Friday nights. 8 miles leaves you famished!

3 miles on tuesday night @ Kirkwood

Hawthorne trail on Saturday morning... I did 5-6 miles that day I think

The Reason

Let me clear one thing at the onset - I have never run before in the twenty something years of my life (well except for those few 100m races in 5th grade).  I am your regular graduate student at UF who spends hours pouring over books or sitting in front of her computer. I have always been an out-doorsy person - badminton, tennis, swimming, basketball - but just to tire myself out so I catch a good night's sleep.

I learnt about Team Asha during my very first week in Gainesville in August 2009.

At the time, all these stories of people running 15kilometers sounded unbelievable. With all the seriousness of a new graduate student, I decided to concentrate on studying and left the running to the cool ones. But last year, in March, some of my friends in Team Asha ran the 15k Gate River Run at Jacksonville.  Seeing these friends run, some of them finishing in good time too, I was eager to join the group and start running.

15k suddenly became believable.

I started in August last Fall, and despite some minor injuries and major graduate courses, I have been running regularly with Team Asha. I have met some really nice people on the trail - every single person dedicated to the cause of educating underprivileged children in India. We volunteer our time and efforts and raise money to support organisations working for children's education in India. This in the first time I am putting my efforts for a good cause, and it feels great. Just thinking about the number of lives I will touch through this one run, is heart warming. I sincerely hope I can do many more of these races, and do my part for the kids back home. Thats the least I can do running here.
